In Part 2 of our coverage of the 2013 MIAS Custom and Classic Car Competition, we’ve talked about the classic cars at the event, and how the modern cars of today evolved from the classic legends. Well, today, we’ll be featuring the latter – the modern cars of today, inspired by the classic legends, but customized and tuned to today’s standards. Let’s go!

These two cars are probably the epitome of automobile evolution.

The modern-day Ford Mustang, evolved from none other than the classic Mustang…

…and the Nissan GT-R, its roots and heritage coming from the legendary Nissan Skyline.

With the GT-R having “Supercar” status, I wouldn’t wonder why some builders would decide to get inspiration from it.

Now the Mustang was quite popular at the show…

…having seen quite a number of interpretations of it.

But to me, the hottest-looking Mustang was probably the one done by Atoy Customs, sporting a super cool body kit. It’s like they put the “M” in “Muscle”! Atoy Customs has always been arguably the best body kit makers in the Philippines, and lately…

Atoy Customs also had their Hyundai Genesis Amuse drift car at the show. The car, ironically being dubbed as the Asian version of the Pony Car, with the 3.8 Genesis Coupe having been compared numerous times to the Mustang V6 by various publications.

That’s one of the reasons why the car gained popularity, spawning numerous body kit iterations…

But of course, with the brand-new Toyota 86 out in the market, with massive popularity, having been tuned and modified by various aftermarket shops and companies, it makes it very hard to decide which one a potential buyer would like to get. Some say if you’re in it for speed, get the Genesis. If you’re in it for the handling, get the 86. Would you agree?

On a more personal note, to tell you frankly, I’m not really a fan of buying cars in the brand-new market. I’d have two other options other than buying brand-new. First, I’d rather pick up a car that you would know would become a future legend at a fraction of the cost of a brand-new car…

…and just spend on the modifications that would suit your needs or purpose.

One good example is what JSK has done to the Mazda RX-7, splurging on a Veilside Fortune body kit for it. Check out our spotlight feature on this car here – VEILSIDE FORTUNE MAZDA RX-7 TOKYO DRIFT Movie Car Replica by JSK Custom.

In most cases, if you go that route, it doesn’t even have to be really expensive. Check out this Suzuki Cappuccino by Concept One and Atoy Customs.

The second option would be to acquire something that almost nobody else has, such as a restored classic…

…or a pre-owned exotic! Why? Even with little modifications to it, other than minor personalizations, you would still have a head-turning machine that wouldn’t depreciate much from the book-value at which you purchased it.

Although sometimes, with some of the latest sports coupes looking absolutely gorgeous, it’s hard not to think of making space for one in your garage. Check out this Nissan 370Z with a Powerhouse Amuse Vestito kit.

But of course, those options may hold true only for your “weekend project cars”.

Most people would still want to customize their daily-drivers…

But there are some people who would like to have cars that can not only be daily-drivers…

…but weekend warriors as well, mixing form and function together, like what Honda fanatics do to the Honda Civic SiR.

There’s no reason why you shouldn’t own and modify one of these as well. These are perfect for Philippine road conditions, if you know what I mean. Also great for taking you places which no ordinary car can!

And sometimes, they can also look good even when dirty!

Modifying these can be pretty much as eccentric as how you modify cars, where you can go form over function, like this Toyota Tamaraw FX with the stretched-tire theme going…

…or function over form, like this purpose-built off-road buggy. We’ll try to put together a spotlight post on this, so stay tuned!
That concludes our round-up coverage of the 2013 MIAS. Next, we’ll be putting the spotlight on some of the cars that caught our eye during the show. I bet that’s something you’re all looking to see.
